Pregnant? Now What?

Positive Pregnancy Test? Now What?

You see the faint line on the pregnancy test.

POSITIVE.

Your mind might be racing with questions, fears, and doubts. But, what do you do first? Who do you call? How quickly can you determine your future?

First, take a deep breath. You are not alone. We are here to walk through this journey with you, answer your questions, and provide you with information in a safe and caring environment.

After receiving a positive pregnancy test or if you think you might be pregnant but haven’t had a test yet, there are a few initial steps to take.

VERIFY YOUR PREGNANCY

Insight Women’s Center offers FREE professional medical-grade quality pregnancy tests administered by our licensed medical professionals. Our tests are 99% accurate and are available within 3 to 5 minutes after testing a urine sample.

WHAT’S AFTER THE PREGNANCY VERIFICATION?

After you’ve received a positive pregnancy test, a limited ultrasound provides additional helpful information to confirm a viable intrauterine pregnancy and determine estimated due date. An ultrasound is a commonly used diagnostic procedure. It uses a type of technology with sound waves to create images. The sound waves bounce off of your baby’s tissues, fluids, and bones, and the transducer (or wand) then picks up these echoes and translates them into the image of your baby you see on the screen. Limited ultrasound is a FREE service offered at Insight Women’s Center!

When performing a limited ultrasound, our nurse sonographer will be looking for three things:

1. fetal cardiac activity (a heartbeat)

2. how far along you are

3. the location of your pregnancy

There are two types of ultrasounds available at Insight Women’s Center:

  • An abdominal limited ultrasound is a standard procedure that uses a transducer over the abdomen to show the developing baby’s images.
  • A transvaginal limited ultrasound is designed to be used inside the vagina to generate sonogram images. This type is most commonly used during the early stages of pregnancy.

Depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy, our nurse sonographer may choose to perform both types of limited ultrasound with your consent. At the time of your initial appointment, our nurse will determine if you are eligible and/or if scheduling for another day is preferable.

WHY DO I NEED AN ULTRASOUND?

An ultrasound is vital to confirm an intrauterine pregnancy, viability (heart rate), and gestational age. Ultrasound is also helpful as it can determine whether there is an ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg attaches itself to a place other than inside the uterus. An ectopic pregnancy cannot develop properly, and the client will need to seek immediate medical attention.

EDUCATION

It’s essential to understand and be educated on your pregnancy options before making a pregnancy decision. A client advocate will discuss information about your pregnancy options – parenting, adoption, or abortion. The client advocate will also show you a decision-making tool you can use to make a thoughtful, intentional decision on your own, with your partner, or with other support people in your life.

While we can provide a pregnancy test, a limited ultrasound, and give you up-to-date medically accurate information about all your options, Insight Women’s Center does not offer, recommend, or refer for abortion.

Whether a pregnancy is planned or unplanned, we are here for you. You don’t have to walk through this alone. Call 785-842-6499 or click here to set up a free, caring, and confidential appointment.
