Girlfriend is Pregnant

Discovering Your Girlfriend's Pregnant - Your Next Step

If you recently found out that your girlfriend or significant other is pregnant (especially if it’s unplanned), like your past few hours have been filled with frustration as you’ve grappled with the news. This wasn’t in your plans, and suddenly, the weight of future decisions—for yourself, your girlfriend, and your upcoming child—feels overwhelming. As you think through your options, your main goal is to support her, though you’re unsure of the next steps. While she is understandably frightened, you find that you are too, feeling isolated as she speaks with a counselor.

Here is what you – as the man in this relationship – can find at Insight Women’s Center (yes, we have services for guys, too!).

Receiving Guidance and Support
While you’re processing your thoughts, you can schedule to meet with a male advocate. He is there to inquire about your well-being and listen to your concerns. He can provide information similar to what your girlfriend is receiving, discussing the implications of various choices, including parenting, adoption, and abortion[B1] . He will confirm what you already know – that your role is to be supportive during this challenging time. He will also emphasize that you’re not facing this alone, which often alleviates some of the anxiety guys feel during this unsure time.

 Choosing a Path Together
Very often, the compassionate guidance that both the man and the woman find at Insight will lead them to participate in our Bright Course parenting program. From the moment you both discover you are pregnant until your child’s first birthday, the Bright Course parenting program provides education and support to help you both become confident and comfortable in parenting your child. This program offers a space to ask questions, gain knowledge, and find support throughout the pregnancy. You will also learn vital ways to support her emotionally and begin preparing for your role as a father.

Pregnancy is not solely a women’s health issue—it involves both partners. You are not alone in this, and neither is she. The man has a crucial role in deciding whether to parent a child. Recognizing your responsibilities and understanding your role is essential.
